Brands, Email Pitching & TV: Our Favourite Stories of the Week

Before enjoying the Family Day long weekend, take a few moments to catch up on our favourite communications and PR stories of the week. Learn about some of Canada’s most trusted brands, how to pitch journalists via email and which Canadian network went off the air.

Brands:

According to a study by Toronto-based marketing research company BrandSpark International, Campbell’s, Coca-Cola and Heinz are among the most trusted brands in Canada. The company released the results of its 2015 BrandSpark Most Trusted Award winners earlier this week. As well as listing which consumer packaged goods brands Canadian shoppers trust most, the results also show what drives trust in brands among consumers.

Most categories had a sole winner. We’ve listed a handful below, but you can read more about the results in the article link attached.

  • Food and beverage – Tetley (tea category)
  • Cereal – Kellogg’s
  • Peanut butter – Kraft
  • Sunscreen – Coppertone

Pitching:

Generally you have about five seconds to grab a journalist’s attention when pitching them via email. At PR News’ recent Writing Workshop in San Francisco, Angie Larsen, senior manager of corporate relations at USANA Health Sciences, shared some tips to keep your email pitches from ending up in a reporter’s digital trash can. We have outlined each of her tips below, but explained in further detail in the article.

  • Write concise, informative subject lines – Keep your subject lines between four and seven words.
  • Stick to the facts in your pitch – Keep it simple by making sure the body of the email focuses on the facts of the story you are presenting.
  • Know your target – Research reporters to learn their beats and determine whom you should reach out to.
  • Become a go-to expert – Reporters are always looking for new sources of information.
  • Think like a journalist – Bring them specific information and insights and keep in mind that they are pressed for time and resources.

Media:

As of 5 a.m. (Eastern) this morning The Sun News Network went off the air after negotiations to sell the television channel were unsuccessful. As some of you may know, the closure of the channel comes after months of not knowing its fate due to Postmedia Network Canada announcing its plans to purchase the Sun Media newspapers and websites. A news release was issued expressing that Sun Media spent months looking for a potential buyer.
